Chapter Eleven

Renee sat at the resort’s café, absentmindedly eating her chips. The leg that was crossed over her knee swung in lazy circles.

Gone was the anxiety that had filled her stomach this morning as she crossed the bridge to the resort. Ian had quickly chased away her nerves this morning as he swooped into the pavilion with Grace, who was dressed in a white frilly flower girl’s dress. The trio had spent the morning laughing as they followed Grace’s suggestions on how to pose. Ian had even relinquished the camera to Renee and she had shot a series of pictures with the two. Her heart had warmed, and unwittingly the picture of him as a dad had surfaced. He was gentle, kind, playful, and full of love.

He’d make a great father and husband.

The unwitting thought came, but before she could chase it away, Ian pulled out a chair and slid into it. His long legs stretched out and his left leg was dangerously near hers.

“Usually people wait to sit down until they are invited.”

Her icy tone had no effect on him.

He winked. “That beautiful look in your eyes was all the invitation I needed.”

She shook her head at his audacity. However, an unwitting smile battled with her disapproving frown. “Wow, you really need to work on your pick up lines.”

He leaned back in the chair, interlacing his fingers behind his head and stretching his legs out further. “What would you suggest?”

She shrugged. “I wouldn’t know.”

“What could I say to convince you to go out on a date with me?”

They stared at each other for a moment, her lips slightly parted in surprise. Her traitorous heart whispered, Or is it delight?

With sham innocence, Ian added, “Hypothetically, of course.”

Renee lifted one shoulder in an indifferent shrug. “I am not some foolish girl to fall for some cleverly phrased quip.”

His smile deepened and his tone grew soft, husky, and tender. “No, you have never been that kind of girl.”

Their eyes locked for a long moment, but then he cleared his throat.

“I heard from Bonnie that Angela is thinking about going to the retreat.”

Renee was glad for the change in topic. She was tired of running away from him. Because you enjoy his company. You enjoy him. You can be real with him.

She wiped her fingers on the napkin, ignoring the whispers of her heart. “That’s good. Angela wasn’t at last week’s meeting. I thought for sure she wasn’t coming.”

“She’s struggling with her faith. Her dad was one of those people God places in your path to keep you solid when you feel like you’re sinking in quicksand. He did that for me while I was deployed. I was new to my faith, freshly sober and daily teetering on the brink of throwing it all in.” He sighed, his face showing his pain. “And I was full of anger.”

“About your past?”

Ian nodded. “I was angry at God, angry at myself, and my dad.”

He snagged one of her chips and popped it in his mouth. The action brought to mind their past and rekindled that warmth they shared.
